CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF CELEBRITY SCENTS
-From Elizabeth Taylor to Britney Spears, celebrating the UK’s favourite celebrity perfumes-

As the UK's largest specialist fragrance retailer The Perfume Shop celebrates 25 years on the high street, the business looks back at the best-selling celebrity fragrances over that period.

The first celebrity scent, which launched in 1991, was Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds. This launch from one of the original global movie-stars created a whole new market of perfumes endorsed and created by famous faces – a market which is worth £1.25bn today.

While recent reports by market research group NPD, speculate that the celebrity fragrance market is declining, The Perfume Shop believes there is a place in the market for celebrity scents and recent best-selling launches from Ari Sweet Like Candy and Rihanna Nude bear this out.

For the last seven years, Britney has been the no.1 selling celebrity brand at the retailer, with one bottle of Britney Fantasy selling every 30 seconds in the UK. Her limited edition scents like Britney Spears Maui received almost a quarter of all product enquiries on social media when it launched. This year so far it is Sarah Jessica Parker who has taken the top spot as the best-selling celebrity fragrance, with Ariana Grande in second place and Britney currently taking the third spot.

2017 best-selling celebrity fragrances revealed by The Perfume Shop:

1 LOVELY SARAH JESSICA PARKER
2 ARI SWEET LIKE CANDY
3 FANTASY BRITNEY SPEARS
4 BEYONCE HEAT
5 RIHANNA NUDE

Beyoncé appeared at number ten in the list of top searches on its website for 2016, with Ariana Grande not far behind taking 13th spot. Last year sales of the Ariana Grande fragrance grew by 50% and this year she continues to be one of the top-selling celebrity fragrances at The Perfume Shop with her fragrance, Ari Sweet Like Candy.

Looking back historically over the last 25 years it is clear celebrity trends have come and gone, from Kate Moss to Katie Price there has been a perfume for everyone who has followed celebrity culture.

The twentieth century saw an explosion in celebrity culture and the launch of celebrity perfume. Glow by Jennifer Lopez was the first celeb scent of the new era which was an instant success and spawned many imitators and continues to do so. Our customers continue to show support for celebrity fragrance and as long as it’s the right celebrity and a great perfume, we look forward to supporting them for another 25 years and beyond.”
