Waitrose is introducing a new charcoal pizza to its premium Waitrose 1 range, made from hand-stretched sourdough and baked in a wood-fired oven. The completely black base and charcoal taste of the new pizza is part of a growing culinary trend, first introduced into Waitrose last year.*
The new wood-fired pizza is made with a charcoal dough and topped with classic Italian antipasti ingredients including porchetta, Napoli salami, marinated artichokes, sun soaked tomatoes and Leccino olives.
With its blackened dough and colourful toppings, this dramatic-looking pizza is the perfect combination of flavour and texture. The crisp base benefits from the umami flavour of the charcoal, which is the perfect mix of bitterness and acidity and provides a wonderful foil for the fresh, sweet and salty flavours of the antipasti toppings.
Manisha Kotecha, pizza developer for Waitrose, comments: “With the growing popularity of charcoal in food and drink and the striking visual that it delivers, we know our wood-fired antipasti pizza will be a big hit. It represents the food of Italy on a plate - culinary simplicity combined with the finest, freshest ingredients available.”
The charcoal-based pizza is part of a new range from Waitrose 1 of hand-stretched
sourdough pizzas, that will be available in Waitrose branches nationwide
towards the end of May and will retail at £4.79.
