Today (19th August) Waitrose reveals that gin is the tipple of choice this year, as sales of the spirit soar by 17% compared to 2015.
Whether it’s a traditional Gin & Tonic or a gin based cocktail, the spirit is having its moment with a new wave of millennial gin fans.
The supermarket’s top selling three spirits are all gins, with one in every three bottles of spirit sold at Waitrose being gin.
Gin now pips Pimms to prime position as the ‘weathervane’ of drinks - when the sun shines the nation indulges in a gin and tonic.
So far this year, Waitrose has added six exciting new gins to its already extensive range. The supermarket now sells 43 different versions of gin - the widest range in a UK supermarket.
John Vine, Waitrose Spirits Buyer comments, “Customers are discovering that gin lends itself to being shaken up with more than just tonic. In fact, there are more classic cocktails made with gin than with any other spirit thanks to the vast diversity of flavours available. The innovation happening in the gin world, especially with artisanal distilleries, makes is a very exciting time for gin lovers.'
In December 2015 Mintel revealed that over half of gin drinkers are under 35, as the trend for gin based cocktails rocketed last year. This is in line with a number of new artisan, London based distilleries which have been popping up across the capital in recent years. These gins are distilled using the classic ingredients of London Dry Gin, including botanicals such as juniper, coriander, almond, orris root and angelica, with a few secret ingredients thrown in to set these artisan gins apart.
