Waitrose is proudly reporting a 177% increase in sales of English wine this week, as English Wine Week fast approaches.
The supermarket's 60% market share* proves that customer passion and dedication is a winning formula for the success of home-grown wine. From well-known vineyards like Nyetimber and Ridgeview making sparkling wine to rival Champagne, to smaller wineries serving one local shop, the range of wine being made in the UK is at an all-time high. Crucially, sales in 2014 were up 95% on 2013 at the supermarket, proving that the rise in popularity is here to stay.
Waitrose stocks over 100 English and Welsh wines, the widest range available in a UK supermarket, many of which are delivered directly to branches from vineyards within a 30 mile radius, as well as being stocked nationwide online at Waitrose Cellar.
Rebecca Hull MW, English wine buyer says, “The success of English wine is a culmination of dedication and effort from some talented winemakers across the country who have gradually built the reputation of our wines from the ground up. We are thrilled that our market share is so high, and this is down to our customer's passion for locally grown produce.
She continues: “We make some delicious, award-winning wines in this country including on our own farm in Hampshire, and I can confidently say our range is packed full of true UK wine heroes. There is a real momentum among the English wine industry right now, as new plantings come on stream and English winemakers perfect their art, so it's an exciting time to be involved in English wine and we're truly excited about the future. We'll be launching lots more new English wines over the coming months.”
That passion and dedication has created several exclusive bottles to Waitrose; The Waitrose Leckford Estate Brut, made from grapes from the supermarket's farm in Hampshire, has proven extremely popular and the new 2012 vintage will be available in late summer 2015. A partnership with Denbies in Surrey has also resulted in The Limes Selection 2013/14 English Dry White, which exclusively launched at Waitrose in 2014.
